After two successful BigBrain workshops held 2015 in Jülich and 2017 in Montreal, we are pleased to announce the 3rd workshop on the BigBrain and its applications, to be held in Düsseldorf and Jülich on August 20 - 21, 2019. The workshop will last 2 days, with informal reception on Tuesday evening.

Visit of German Chancellor and Canadian Prime Minister at MILA

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visit MILA and met Yoshua Bengio, Katrin Amunts, Alan Evans. They led a discussion on drug discovery and brain mapping and brought forth unique research collaborations between German and Canadian research centres.

Boris awarded a Neuro Commercialization Ignite Grant

Boris Bernhardt is among the winners of the Ignite Grants Competition III in the HBHL Neuro Commercialization Grants program. His project proposal on 'BrainScores: a tool for multimodal, quantitative, and collaborative MRI analysis' was awarded with $50,000.

Yashar Zeighami appointed Assistant Professor

Yashar Zeighami was appointed Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Psychiatry at the Douglas Research Centre. His research focuses on understanding the underlying mechanisms involved in healthy brain aging and how different genetic and environmental factors will result in the deviation from a healthy trajectory toward neurodegenerative disorders.

Markus Axer wins HIP scientific image contest

Markus Axer is the winner of the Helmholtz Imaging Best Scientific Image Contest 2021 with the image “The monkey’s fiber architecture revealed by Polarized Light” which shows the courses and orientations of nerve fibers in the cerebellum of a teenage vervet monkey brain.

HIBALL will in a multitude of ways contribute to the HBP objective to create and operate EBRAINS as a European scientific research infrastructure for brain research, cognitive neuroscience, and other brain-inspired sciences, as well as to gather, organise and disseminate data describing the brain and its diseases.

Predictive cost functions in the neocortex

Neural computation is the product of two optimization procedures: natural selection and learning in the individual's lifetime. But, identifying what the neocortex has been optimized for, given its repeated circuit motifs and complex relationship to behaviour, is very challenging.
